What Is a Facelift? Types, Techniques, and Expected Outcomes

Facial aging occurs over time due to a combination of factors such as skin changes, gravity, and genetics. These changes may include reduced skin elasticity, shifting of underlying tissues, and the development of lines or sagging in certain areas of the face and neck. While non-surgical treatments may provide temporary improvement, a facelift is a surgical option that may be considered for more noticeable or longer-term changes.
What Is a Facelift?
A facelift, also known as rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that aims to improve visible signs of ageing in the face and neck. Current surgical approaches focus on repositioning deeper facial structures, rather than tightening the skin alone, to support a more balanced and natural appearance.

A facelift may address:
- Sagging in the midface and cheeks
- Deep folds between the nose and mouth (nasolabial folds)
- Loss of definition along the jawline (jowls)
- Loose skin or excess fat in the lower face and neck
Common Techniques and Approaches
Each individual has unique anatomical features and concerns. We tailor our approach based on clinical assessment and your treatment goals.
- SMAS Facelift – The Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System (SMAS) is a layer of tissue beneath the skin. In this technique, we adjust and support this layer to improve facial contour. Addressing this deeper structure may provide more sustained support compared to skin-only techniques.
- Deep Plane Facelift – This approach involves repositioning deeper facial tissues by releasing certain supporting structures. It may be considered in selected cases where there is more significant sagging in the midface or jawline.
- Mini Facelift – A mini facelift may be suitable for individuals with mild to moderate changes. It typically involves smaller incisions and focuses on the lower face and jawline.
The choice of technique depends on individual factors, and we will discuss suitable options during consultation.
Expected Outcomes and Recovery
A facelift does not stop the ageing process, but it may improve certain visible signs of ageing. Outcomes vary between individuals. After surgery, it is common to experience swelling and bruising. These effects are usually more noticeable in the first one to two weeks and gradually improve. We provide detailed post-operative care instructions to support your recovery.

Most individuals can resume light daily activities within the period advised during consultation, while full recovery and settling of results may take several months.
